What Makes Nikon AI & AI-S Lenses So Special?


Vintage lenses are more than just nostalgia, they each have a unique personality. Nikon AI and AI-S lenses have earned a loyal following thanks to their beautifully balanced image quality and timeless character.


Nikon AI's were Nikon's answer to the much-loved Canon FD lenses. They produce a sharper image in the centre wide open and offer higher control when dealing with flares. Offering a cooler feel compared to the Canon FD's while still giving a natural fall off towards the edge of full frame sensors. The Nikon's were more consistent on the f-stops, creating a more harmonised set. 


Now with enhanced bokeh due to the introduction of a circular iris, the lenses give a pleasing separation between the focus point and background. Stopping the lenses down enhances the sharpness and contrast, making them a versatile and capable lens to capture the artist's vision. 
But where did they come from?


The story begins with Nikon's legendary F-mount, introduced in 1959. In 1977, Nikon launched AI (Automatic Indexing), replacing the manual aperture indexing system with a faster, more intuitive mechanical coupling that made changing lenses significantly more efficient. Just four years later, AI-S refined the design with an improved aperture mechanism, providing greater exposure precision and supporting the next generation of camera technology.

They are sharp yet have less micro contrast than most primes which works for pleasing skin tones. The highlights tend to have a slight glow, and the faster lenses can deliver unique blooming effects and aberrations when shot wide-open. Each lens gives you two looks in one, simply by where you set the iris.

Zero Optik swapped the iris blades for 14 blade irises that leave the bokeh smooth, soft, and never distracting regardless of what stop you are shooting at compared to the original distracting designs being 7 and 9 straight blade irises.

The NIKKOR 8mm f 2.8 FISHEYE LENS is limited to certain shooting applications—but its effect is remarkable. This fisheye’s specialty is its insane horizontal angle of view. The Nikon 8mm f 2.8 AI-s fisheye lens can capture 180-degree panoramas, far wider than the grand majority of normal cinema lenses and even most wide angles lenses.
