DIFFUSION / CONTRAST FILTERS:
new 4x5 TIFFEN BLACK FOG: provides an overall atmospheric softening that creates a smooth wide flare from the highlights yet keeps the blacks, black without overly muting colors or losing detail in shadows. A subtle effect, it can be used to add an overall look to a project.
new 4x5 TIFFEN NIGHT FOG: yields a natural fog effect with overall atmospheric softening and wide flare, coupled with unique contrast reduction technology that reduces highlights without darkening shadows. In light grades it provides a beautiful new look. In strong grades it flattens the contrast and desaturates color so it is useful for day-for-night.

David Mullen ASC writes about the effects of FILTERS: “I’ve been helping Ryan Avery on a book he is writing on diffusion filters. The principle behind a diffusion filter is that there must be clear areas for light to travel through directly, so the focus stays sharp, and other areas that bend and diffract light rays, throwing the image out-of-focus. It’s this overlay of sharp and soft images that creates diffusion. The classic example is perhaps the oldest diffusion filter ever made, a net. The threads of the weave bend the light but the gaps allow sharp rays to pass through. Anything that obstructs or bends the light rays can create artifacts like halation, some patterns more than others. Mist / fog / low-contrast filters are a subset of diffusion where the particles that cause halation are often small enough to have minimal effect on sharpness (but keep in mind that sharpness and contrast are intertwined). There are a number of filter designs that create a mix of halation and softening of detail. It’s all a matter of taste.
The Tiffen Black Diffusion F/X was designed by Ira Tiffen to soften on image with almost no visible artifacts like halation. Ira created a “C” shaped pattern to soften detail without creating halation; I think the black dot pattern also softened slightly while keeping the contrast from being lowered.
When 24P 2/3” HD came along in 2000, the extra depth of field of the smaller sensors caused some filter patterns to come into focus. The Schneider HD Classic Soft used smaller and more random “dimples” or lenslets compared to the Classic Soft, and Tiffen removed the black dot pattern in the Black Diffusion F/X, creating Digital Diffusion F/X.
There are a couple of “combo” filters that mix two different patterns on the glass, usually a fine pattern to create halation and a coarser pattern to soften fine detail. Schneider has the Hollywood Black Magic which combines a Black Frost with an HD Classic Soft. Tiffen has the Black Satin which combines GlimmerGlass (I think) with Digital Diffusion F/X.
I shot these photos with a macro lens. I had to put a bright-to-dark gradient behind the glass to see the relief patterns.”
